sUPPORT oUR Music Program - Fall Direct Drive 2023
Our band, orchestra, jazz ensembles, drumline, and choir are all growing, and we need to purchase more instruments, and take care of the ones we have, so that every student that wants an opportunity to participate in music has that chance. The operating budget of the music program is funded nearly 100% through fundraising which is why our direct drive is so important! The school district does not purchase new instruments as our program grows or replace worn out equipment. That means that our program is responsible for funding the purchase of new instruments, music, supplies, financial aid, uniforms, etc.
We are truly thankful for the funds raised last year! With the generous donations from our supporters, we were able to purchase additional percussion equipment (marimba - $4,000, marching percussion $3,000, etc.), a marching baritone ($2,000), 2 new violins ($750 each), lots of new sheet music for band, orchestra, choir, and jazz ensemble, provide financial aid support for our trip to Disneyland, continue our instrumental coaching, and repair several instruments.
This year, we aim to continue supporting the growth of our music program, provide unforgettable opportunities for students, and ensuring our program is equitable for every student! Projections for what instruments we need now and for upcoming musicians include: a tuba, a bassoon, a new cello, funds to tune the pianos in the music room and theater, instrumental music coaching and more sheet music to add to the music library. In addition to these ongoing operating budget items we are also launching a capital campaign for upgrades to our theater. Our acoustic sound shells we use for performances in our theater need to be replaced, an expense of at least $10,000. We are hoping to raise $15,000, to cover these costs and the cost of growing and we can't do it without your help!
Please donate the amount that is comfortable, or maybe a little stretch, to help us with these goals. Direct Drive Donations labeled Music or made online at our Music Donation link will go straight to the Music Program. Donations can be made one of 3 ways:

Our Friends of West Seattle Music and Drama (FOWSMD) group is a 501c3 - Non-profit organization so any donation is tax deductible!
The Direct Drive is one of two major fundraisers we coordinate, the other is our Big Band Dinner Dance in March, a community event that will also have an element of fundraising. And we may ask for a little here and there as we go along. We greatly appreciate any donations you make during the year and endeavor to use every dollar to the fullest.
Does your employer match your donation? Our brand new non-profit, Friends of West Seattle Music and Drama, is now set up for Microsoft employees and we will be happy to help with any paperwork for other employers. Please contact us at [email protected] to coordinate that set up.
